Many manufacturing processes that produce economic parts require tools of one sort or another. Such processes include:

  • Injection moulding
  • Blow moulding
  • Rotational moulding
  • Extrusion (plastic or aluminium)
  • Metal casting (sand tools)
  • Gravity and pressure die casting of metals
  • Vacuum forming
  • Metal pressing
  • Form cutting

Tool layout options (especially relevant to injection moulding).

Option 1: Single cavity tools (A tool for every part). This is the most flexible arrangement of materials, colours and quality outcomes but may not be the cheapest tooling.

Option 2: Multi-cavity tools (1 tool per part with 2 or more cavities per tool). This suits higher production quantities and generally leads to lower part costs at the expense of higher tooling costs

Option 3: Family tools (1 or more cavities per part with several parts per tool). This can be the most economic tooling arrangement but requires a common material and colour for all parts. Part quality also becomes inter-dependant.
